Oceans naturally absorb CO2. When CO2 dissolves in H2O, it forms carbonic acid. Many types of oceanic plankton and other small animals use calcite and soluble minerals to build their shells, but calcite dissolves in carbonic acid. Other spices like squid and whales may find it harder to keep their blood acid levels down. A change in ocean chemistry might break down molecules, setting toxic metals free and destroying important nutrients. Carbonic Acid in oceans can have massive disruptions o the oceans' food chains.

Potential impacts on harvested species like fishes and squids are more uncertain. One area of concern is acidosis, or the build-up of carbonic acid in body fluids, which can disrupt growth, respiration and reproduction. An indirect but perhaps more certain consequence is that many species will suffer from the loss of marine calcifiers, which provide essential food and habitat (including coral reefs) for countless ocean dwellers.
